All Democrats registered to vote in Groton (Town and/or City) are invited to attend a caucus of the Groton Democratic party on Thursday, Jan 11th at 6:30 pm at Thrive 55 /The Senior Center, Newtown Road, Groton to learn more about the Groton Democrats. The snow date is Friday, Jan 12th at 6 pm.
The purpose of the caucus is to elect members to the Groton Democratic Town Committee (GDTC) for the next two years. Members will be elected by district caucuses of each of the seven voting districts in Groton.
The purpose of the GDTC is to help elect Democrats to office, at the local, state, and federal level. The GDTC meets on the 4th Wed. of most months, at 7 pm, at the Thrive 55 Center. The caucus will count as the January meeting.
The GDTC is responsible for recruiting and endorsing candidates to run for local offices (Town Council, Board of Education, and RTM) and for electing delegates to attend Conventions to endorse candidates for State Representative, State Senate, Judge of Probate, Congress, and the Senate, and State Offices.
Delegate elections take place at the March GDTC meeting. Conventions are held in May. Additionally, the GDTC will select ten candidates for Justices of the Peace and a candidate for Registrar of Voters.
Members elected in January will take office at the March meeting when they elect officers for the next two years.
The GDTC plans to open a headquarters in late summer for the November Presidential election. Numerous volunteer opportunities will be available at that time. New members and others who want to be involved are always welcome.
